Doug Smith

Doug has over 35 years of experience working with children, adolescents, adults and families as a licensed social worker. Doug also has extensive experience working with clients with substance abuse disorders. As a therapist, Doug uses a variety of approaches to ensure that clients have a positive experience in treatment. Doug believes in a client centered approach in therapy with a focus on developing positive coping skills and setting realistic goals.
Doug utilizes "mindfulness" as a way to help clients become more aware of their own experiences and as a way to stay present in all situations. "Mindfulness" has been proven to reduce anxiety and to improve self-empowerment.
Doug is currently employed at Christiana Care as a psychiatric social worker in the emergency department. Doug assists the crisis team with traumas and all psychiatric emergencies. Doug was also a professor at three different universities teaching courses in counseling and psychology. He received his bachelor's degree from Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio. He earned his master's degree from West Chester University in West Chester, Pennsylvania.
Doug has spent most of his life in Delaware. Doug enjoys spending time with his family and he enjoys running and golf. Doug also enjoys traveling and has goals to visit all the national parks in America.
